Crotcheting- An Introduction

Lace always has great feminine appeal and it is fascinating to think that this lovely work can be produced in leisure moments. Crotchet-lace, so charming for home and personal accessories , wears a lifetime, washes beautifully, and always comes up crisp and fresh looking.

Materials for crotchet, procurable at every needlework shop, are very inexpensive. Cotton crotchet threads, plain or mercerised are made in a wide range of thicknesses suitable for everything from the finest handkerchief edgings to tablecloths and bedspreads. Like all other lace, white and ecru are elegant, though for modern day table mats, chairbacks  and so , one can choose from the  lovely shades in which many threads are available.

For wool crotchet , any kind of wool can be employed , the finer and the softer ones particularly making work of a delightful texture for baby-wear and adult garments.

First Step  for those  learning to crotchet  is to become familiar  with the "feel" of the hook.and thread. Hold the hook pencil wise in the right hand, and the work between the thumb and the first finger of the left hand, allowing the thread to run lightly  over the fingers and down between the third and little fingers to regulate its tension.

Start  by practising with a big hook and some coarse wool and make a length of chain, because  chain  is the basic stitch of crotchet.  Try double crotchet next- this is the second easiest stitch- and make one or two little sample patches, then progress to the other stitches which we shall discuss in the next post.
